Modern Irish

Irish is a Celtic language of the Goidelic branch spoken in Ireland. Although once spoken across the whole of the island, it is currently a minority vernacular in Ireland, spoken in specific communities and most particularly in officially-recognised Gaeltachtaí, which exist around the Republic of Ireland. It is constitutionally upheld as the national and first official language of the Republic of Ireland, and it is an official language of the European Union. It is also an officially recognised minority language in Northern Ireland.

Die irische Sprache (irisch Gaeilge oder Gaolainn, nach der bis 1948 geltenden Orthographie meist Gaedhilge) ist eine der drei goidelischen oder gälischen Sprachen. Zu diesen zählen auch das Schottisch-Gälische und das Manx (eine früher auf der Insel Man gesprochene Sprache). Die goidelischen Sprachen zählen zum inselkeltischen Zweig der keltischen Sprachen. Laut des 8. Verfassungsartikels ist sie „die Hauptamtssprache“ (an phríomhtheanga oifigiúil) der Republik Irland, „da [sie] die nationale Sprache ist“. Auch die Europäische Union führt Irisch seit dem 1. Januar 2007 als eine ihrer 23 Amtssprachen. Im Deutschen wird sie bisweilen, jedoch ungenau, nur als Gälisch bezeichnet. Insbesondere in England und Schottland wird unter „Gaelic“ meist das Schottisch-Gälische verstanden. Die Sprachkennung des Irischen ist ga oder gle (nach ISO 639); sga bezeichnet Altirisch (bis etwa 900) und mga Mittelirisch (900–1200).

Język irlandzki, język iryjski – język z grupy goidelskiej (q-celtyckiej) języków celtyckich. Język narodowy Irlandczyków uznany został za język urzędowy niepodległej Irlandii (obok angielskiego). Mimo to zaledwie 30 tys. osób posługuje się nim jako językiem ojczystym (głównie w regionach Connemara i Donegal – tzw. Gaeltacht). Około 250 tys. osób posługuje się biegle językiem irlandzkim, a około 1,6 miliona mieszkańców Irlandii posiada jakąkolwiek znajomość swojego języka narodowego, wyniesioną głównie ze szkolnych lekcji.

La lingua irlandese, in irlandese Gaeilge (prima della riforma ortografica del 1948: Gaedhilge) è la lingua nazionale della Repubblica d'Irlanda.È una delle tre lingue goideliche altrimenti dette lingue gaeliche. Tra queste vi sono il gaelico scozzese (compresa la sua variante, il Gaelico Canadese) e il mannese (la lingua dell'isola di Man). Appartiene al gruppo linguistico delle lingue celtiche insulari della famiglia delle lingue celtiche. Secondo l'articolo 8 della costituzione irlandese è la "principale lingua ufficiale" (an phríomhtheanga oifigiúil) dell'Irlanda, poiché è la lingua nazionale. Dal 13 giugno 2005 l'irlandese è anche lingua ufficiale dell'Unione Europea, con decorrenza 1° gennaio 2007.
