Modern Greek

Modern Greek ( or , lit. 'Neo-Hellenic', historically also known as Ρωμαίικα, lit. 'Romaic') refers to the fifth stage of the evolution of the Greek language, i.e. the varieties of Greek spoken in the modern era. Greek is spoken today by approximately 14-17 million people, mainly in Greece and Cyprus but also by minority and immigrant communities in many other countries. The start of the period of the Greek language known as "Modern Greek" is symbolically assigned in the fall of the Byzantine Empire (1453), although strictly speaking it has been shaped since at least the 11th century. During much of this time, the language existed in a situation of diglossia, with regional spoken dialects existing side by side with learned, archaic written forms. Most notably, during much of the 19th and 20th centuries, it was known in the competing varieties of popular Demotic and learned Katharevousa. Today, Standard Modern Greek, a standardised form of Demotic, is the official language of both Greece and Cyprus.

Le grec moderne (en grec : (neo)ellinikí glóssa « langue grecque (moderne) », ou simplement (néa) elliniká) est la langue maternelle de 15 millions de locuteurs, dont 10,7 millions en Grèce où il est langue officielle, comme à Chypre méridionale. Il existe également des minorités de langue grecque en Albanie et en Turquie.

Neugriechisch (neugr. Néa Elliniká, Νέα Ελληνικά), die heutige Sprache der Griechen, ist die Amtssprache von Griechenland (ca. 10,5 Millionen Muttersprachler) und Zypern (ca. 0,7 Mio.) und somit eine der 20 offiziellen Amtssprachen der EU. Außerdem ist es in einigen südalbanischen und süditalienischen Gemeinden, in denen Angehörige griechischer Minderheiten leben, als lokale Amts- oder Schulsprache zugelassen. Zusammen mit den ausgewanderten Griechen und Zyprioten sprechen weltweit etwa 12,3 Millionen Menschen Griechisch als Muttersprache. Das Neugriechische gehört zu den indogermanischen Sprachen, steht innerhalb dieser Sprachfamilie jedoch isoliert da, ist also mit keiner weiteren Sprache näher verwandt.

Język nowogrecki, język grecki nowożytny, albo greka nowożytna, również: demotyk(a), po grecku: Νεοελληνική –  język indoeuropejski, używany współcześnie w Grecji (ok. 10 mln mówiących) i na Cyprze (ok. 540 tys.). Jest on jednocześnie językiem urzędowym tych państw (na Cyprze obok tureckiego).Określenie język nowogrecki zamiast bardziej ogólnego język grecki używane jest w niektórych publikacjach (głównie językoznawczych, ale nie tylko) dla podkreślenia różnicy między starożytnym językiem greckim, a językiem greckim współczesnym.

Aan het begin van de 21e eeuw bestaat er een tendens om voor de moderne Griekse omgangstaal de term kini neo-elliniki (glossa) (= Κοινή Νεοελληνική of gemeenschappelijk(e) Nieuwgrieks(e taal)) te gebruiken.Dit is een soepele en harmonische taal, die de voordelen van katharevousa en dimotiki in zich verenigt.
