For other uses, see Model.An abstract model (or conceptual model) is a theoretical construct that represents something, with a set of variables and a set of logical and quantitative relationships between them. Models in this sense are constructed to enable reasoning within an idealized logical framework about these processes and are an important component of scientific theories. Idealized here means that the model may make explicit assumptions that are known to be false (or incomplete) in some detail. Such assumptions may be justified on the grounds that they simplify the model while, at the same time, allowing the production of acceptably accurate solutions, as is illustrated below.

Le mot modèle synthétise les deux sens symétriques et opposés de la notion de ressemblance, d', de représentation. En effet, il est utilisé :pour un concept ou objet qui est la représentation d'une autre (le « modèle réduit » ou maquette, le « modèle » du scientifique), à construire ou déjà existant. pour un objet réel dont on cherche à donner une représentation, qu'on cherche à imiter (exemple : le « modèle » du peintre, le « modèle » que constitue le maître pour le disciple).

Ein Modell ist allgemein eine auf bestimmte Zwecke ausgerichtete vereinfachende Beschreibung der Wirklichkeit. In der wissenschaftlichen Theoriebildung ist ein Modell das Ergebnis einer abstrahierenden und Relationen hervorhebenden Darstellung des behandelten Phänomens. Ein Modell entsteht, wenn Elemente aus dem Phänomen abstrahiert und zueinander in Beziehung gesetzt werden. Die Funktion des Modells besteht darin, aus den dargestellten Zusammenhängen Bedingungen und Prognosen bezüglich des Phänomens (oder Problems) ableiten zu können.

In ambito scientifico e tecnico, per modello si intende genericamente una rappresentazione di un oggetto o di un fenomeno, rappresentazione che riproduce caratteristiche o comportamenti ritenuti fondamentali per il tipo di ricerca che si sta svolgendo. Nell'ambito delle singole scienze il termine modello assume di volta in volta connotazioni più specifiche:modello in fisica.modello in ingegneria informatica.modello nella logica matematica.modello in matematica.
