A mobile Internet device (MID) is a multimedia-capable mobile device providing wireless Internet access. They are designed to provide entertainment, information and location-based services for personal use, rather than for corporate use. They allow 2-way communication and real-time sharing. An MID is larger than a smartphone but smaller than an Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC). They have been described as filling a niche between smartphones and Tablet PCs. They are an easy way to stay in contact with others wirelessly.

Mobile Internet Device (MID, mobiles Internetgerät) ist eine von verschiedenen Anbietern verwendete Bezeichnung für einen multimediafähigen Handheld mit schnurlosem Internetzugang. Es dient der Unterhaltung, Information und standortbasierten Diensten für den privaten Markt. Nur zweitrangig sind sie für Unternehmen gedacht. Ein MID ist etwas größer als ein Smartphone, aber kleiner als ein Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC). Solche Geräte wurden daher so bezeichnet, dass sie die Nische zwischen Smartphones und Tablet PCs füllen. Diese Grenze ist jedoch nicht genau definiert. Ein typischer Vertreter wäre das Nokia N810 oder das Gigabyte M528 (Aigo MID).

Con il termine Mobile Internet Device (spesso abbreviato in MID) vengono indicati alcuni particolari UMPC (ovvero computer ultra portatili di dimensioni a metà strada tra quelle di un palmare e di un tradizionale notebook) destinati soprattutto alla navigazione in Internet e pensati soprattutto per un pubblico non professionale (a differenza del target degli UMPC), il cui sviluppo è stato portato avanti nel corso del 2007 da parte di Intel.
