Mistral is an infrared homing surface-to-air missile manufactured by the European multinational company MBDA missile systems (formerly by Matra BAe Dynamics). Based on the French SATCP (Sol-Air À Très Courte Portée), the portable missile later to become the Mistral began development in 1974. It was initially deployed in 1988.

Die Mistral-Rakete (sowohl Mistral 1 und Mistral 2) ist eine Fire-and-Forget-Flugabwehrrakete mit zweistufigem Feststoff-Raketenmotor. Sie kann sowohl von boden- als auch von luft- und wassergestützten Systemen abgefeuert werden.Das Projekt wurde 1977 in Frankreich durch Matra, Aérospatiale und TDA gestartet, die ersten Prototypen wurden bereits sechs Jahre später getestet. 1988 wurde die "Mistral 1" bei den französischen Streitkräften in Dienst gestellt. Ab 2000 wurden ausschließlich "Mistral 2"-Raketen gebaut und ausgeliefert.

Mistral (Provençal; wiatr mistrz, od Maestre - mistrz, pan, majestro) to suchy, zimny, porywisty wiatr wiejący w południowej Francji poprzez  Masyw Centralny. Jest on związany z lokalnym układem cyrkulacji powietrza – pojawia się, gdy nad wschodnim Atlantykiem tworzy się ośrodek wysokiego ciśnienia, a nad Europą Zachodnią przemieszcza się układ niskiego ciśnienia. Kierunek i siła mistralu nad Morzem Śródziemnym są modulowane przez Alpy, Pireneje i Masyw Centralny. Mistral najczęściej pojawia się w okresie zimowym i wiosennym, i stanowi duże zagrożenie dla upraw w tym regionie. Z drugiej strony wiatry mistralowe są znakomite dla windsurfingu.
