Miracle on Ice

The "Miracle on Ice" is the popular nickname for the men's ice hockey game in the 1980 Olympic Winter Games, in which a team of amateur and collegiate players from the United States beat the long-dominant and heavily-favored Soviet Union, in a match held on February 22, 1980, at Lake Placid, New York. The United States went on to win the gold medal by beating Finland 4-2 in their final game. The Soviet Union took the silver by beating Sweden in their final game. Sweden received the bronze medal, and Finland finished 4th.

Miracle sur glace ou Miracle on Ice en anglais, désigne l'improbable victoire de l'équipe des États-Unis d'Amérique sur l'Union soviétique lors des demi-finales du tournoi olympique de hockey sur glace lors des  Jeux olympiques d'hiver, tenus à Lake Placid dans l'État de New York aux États-Unis. À l'occasion de son centenaire, la Fédération internationale de hockey sur glace va sacrer le Miracle sur la glace comme l'événement numéro de son histoire.

Miracle on Ice (englisch für „Wunder auf dem Eis“) wird weltweit, besonders aber in den USA, als allgemeine Bezeichnung für den unerwarteten Gewinn der Goldmedaille bei den Olympischen Winterspielen 1980 durch die US-amerikanische Eishockeynationalmannschaft verwendet. In der allgemeinen Wahrnehmung wird dieses Turnier auf die Begegnung gegen die UdSSR reduziert, welche im Rahmen der Endrunde in Lake Placid stattfand. Dort traten am 22. Februar 1980 ein US-Team von Amateurspielern gegen die zu der Zeit als unschlagbar geltende sowjetische Nationalmannschaft an und konnte entgegen allen Erwartungen den Sieg davontragen. Das Spiel ging in die Eishockeygeschichte ein, auch deshalb, weil dadurch letztendlich der Grundstein für den Gewinn der olympischen Goldmedaille gelegt wurde. Sporthistorisch ist dieses Spiel ähnlich wie das so genannte „Wunder von Bern“ zu beurteilen.

"Miracolo sul ghiaccio" (in inglese Miracle on ice) è il nomignolo popolare usato soprattutto negli Stati Uniti per indicare il torneo di hockey su ghiaccio delle Olimpiadi invernali del 1980, nel quale la squadra statunitense, composta da dilettanti e giocatori universitari, conquistò un'improbabile medaglia d'oro. In particolare, il nomignolo si riferisce all'incontro del girone finale tra USA e URSS del 22 febbraio 1980, disputato a Lake Placid. I sovietici ottennero la medaglia d'argento, mentre il bronzo andò alla Svezia.

Miracle on ice har blivit ett begrepp syftande på ishockeyturneringen vid de Olympiska vinterspelen 1980 i Lake Placid i  New York i USA, då , som bestod av amatörer och collegespelare, besegrade det på förhand favorittippade sovjetiska laget och därmed blev olympiska mästare.
