Mindoro

For the town of Mindoro, Wisconsin in the United States of America, see Mindoro, Wisconsin. Mindoro is the seventh-largest island in the Philippines. It is located southwest of Luzon, and northeast of Palawan. In past times, it has been called Ma-i or Mait by ancient Chinese traders and, by Spaniards, as Mina de Oro (meaning "gold mine") from where the island got its current name. The island was divided into its two present-day provinces, Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro, in 1950. Before then, since 1921, the entire island was one province.

Mindoro est la septième plus grande île des Philippines de par sa superficie. Elle se trouve au sud-ouest de l'île de Luçon et au nord-est de l'île de Palawan. Dans le passé, l'île était appelée Ma-I ou encore Mait par les chinois. Le nom Mindoro vient du nom que les espagnols donnèrent à l'île : "Mina de Oro" (mine d'or"). L'île est aujourd'hui divisée en 2 provinces : Mindoro-Est et Mindoro-Ouest.

Mindoro, filipińska wyspa, położona na południowy zachód Luzon. Około 600 000 mieszkańców, większość na wybrzeżu. Powierzchnia 9733 km2.Wyspa zbudowana jest z wapieni i ze skał krystalicznych. Górzysta, najwyższy szczyt Halcon 2582 m n.p.m. Wybrzeżom towarzyszą wąskie niziny. Panuje klimat równikowy, wilgotny. Roczna suma opadów wynosi ponad 2000 mm. Liczne wodospady w zasobnych w wodę, krótkich rzekach. Występują wtórne bory sosnowe w górach i wilgotne lasy równikowe.

Mindoro is een eiland in de Filipijnen. Het is 9735 km² groot en heeft ruim 1 miljoen inwoners. Het eiland is opgedeeld in de twee provincies: Occidental Mindoro en Oriental Mindoro. De hoofdsteden van deze twee provincies zijn respectievelijk Mamburao en Calapan. Het eiland behoort tot de noordelijke groep eilanden en ligt ten zuiden van Luzon, het grootste eiland van de Filipijnen.
