Military of the United States

The United States Armed Forces is the military service of the United States and is structured into five branches.U.S. Army U.S. Marine CorpsU.S. Navy U.S. Air ForceU.S. Coast GuardAll branches are part of the United States Uniformed Services and are under civilian control with the President serving as commander-in-chief. All branches except the Coast Guard are part of the Department of Defense, which is under the authority of the Secretary of Defense, who is also a civilian. The Coast Guard falls under the authority of the Department of Homeland Security. During wartime, the Coast Guard may be placed under the Department of Defense through the Department of the Navy in times of need acting as a service to the Navy.

Les forces armées des États-Unis (United States Armed Forces), souvent appelées armée américaine (US military) dans le langage courant, est une armée entretenue par les États-Unis d'Amérique. Elle compte plus d'un million de militaires actifs, il s'agit en effectifs de la deuxième ou troisième armée mondiale, derrière l'Armée populaire de libération chinoise et pratiquement à égalité avec l'armée indienne. Die Streitkräfte der Vereinigten Staaten (auf engl. offiziell: United States Armed Forces, inoffiziell meist US military) sind das in Bezug auf die Höchste Personalstärke zweitgrößte Militär der Welt (nach der chinesischen Volksbefreiungsarmee). Sie gliedern sich in fünf hierarchisch aufgebaute Teilstreitkräfte und stellen eine feste Größe der US-amerikanischen Außenpolitik dar. Die Streitkräfte der USA bestehen aus etwa 1,37 Millionen Aktiven und knapp 860.000 Reservisten, mit allen Abteilungen der Reserve ergab sich im Haushaltsjahr 2004 eine Stärke von knapp 2,58 Millionen Mann. Zusätzlich verfügen sie über etwa 667.000 zivile Mitarbeiter. Oberbefehlshaber ist der Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten, während die zwei Kammern im Kongress die demokratische Kontrolle ausüben. Die älteste Teilstreitkraft ist das Heer, welches 1775 gegründet wurde, die jüngsten sind die Luftstreitkräfte von 1947.
