Miletus (Carian: Anactoria Hittite: Milawata or Millawanda, Greek: Μίλητος transliterated Miletos, Turkish: Milet) was an ancient city on the western coast of Anatolia (in what is now Aydin Province, Turkey), near the mouth of the Maeander River in ancient Caria. The site first became inhabited in the Bronze age. The city was part of the Ionian League.

Mileto fu una città dell'Asia Minore situata sulla foce del fiume Meandro, che si distinse nel mondo antico per l'intensa vita intellettuale, economica e politica.Dopo la fondazione cretese e un periodo di dominio da parte dei micenei, la città rimase fino all'VIII secolo a.C. sotto il controllo della dinastia dei Nelidi.In seguito a questa fase il governo fu esercitato dall'aristocrazia, che fece diventare Mileto un attivissimo centro commerciale, anche grazie al potenziamento dei commerci marittimi.
