Midian

In the Bible, Midian (Hebrew: מִדְיָן, Standard Midyan Tiberian ; Arabic مدين; "Strife; judgment") is a son of Abraham and his concubine Keturah (who according to midrash is Hagar).His descendants, the Midianites, settled in the territory east of the Jordan River and also much of the area east of the Dead Sea (later occupied by Ammonites, Moabites and Edomites), and southward through the desert wilderness of the Arabah. During the time of the Exodus, their territory apparently also included portions of the Sinai Peninsula. They dominated this territory from roughly the twelfth through the tenth centuries BCE.

D'après la Bible, Madian ou Midian est un des fils de Abraham et de sa concubine Ketourah. Ses descendants, les Madianites, se seraient installés à l'Est du Jourdain entre la mer Morte et jusqu'à la péninsule du Sinaï au sud. Moïse y fut accueilli pendant 40 ans par le prêtre de cette tribu, Jethro, après avoir fui l'Égypte. Il y épouse Tsiporah, l'une des filles de Jethro. C'est au cours de cette période du récit que Dieu se révèle dans l'épisode du buisson ardent et envoie Moïse délivrer le peuple d'Israël de l'esclavage.

Midian (hebr. מִדְיָן) ist der Name des Stammvaters der Midianiter im Tanach, der hebräischen Bibel. So heißt dort zugleich dieses Volk und sein Siedlungsgebiet. Der Name bedeutet wörtlich „Streitsache“ oder „Gerichtsurteil" (arab. مَدْيَن madyan).

Nella Bibbia, Madian (Ebraico: מִדְיָן, Standard Midyan Tiberiense ; Arabo مدين; "Conflitto; Giudizio") è un figlio di Abramo e la sua concubina Chetura (che, secondo il midrash è Agar).I suoi discendenti, i Madianiti, colonizzarono il territorio a est del Giordano  e anche gran parte dell'area a est del Mar Morto (in seguito occupata dagli Ammoniti, dai Moabiti e dagli Edomiti, e verso sud attraverso il selvaggio e disabitato deserto d'Arabia. Durante il periodo dell'Esodo, il loro territorio includeva anche porzioni della penisola del Sinai. Dominarono questo territorio per circa un dodicesimo della sua estensione, durante il X secolo a.C.
