Midi-Pyrénées

Midi-Pyrénées (Occitan: Miègjorn-Pirenèus; Gascon: Mieidia-Pirenèus) is the largest region of metropolitan France by area, larger than the Netherlands or Denmark.Midi-Pyrénées has no historical or geographical unity. It is one of the regions of France created artificially in the late 20th century to serve as an hinterland and zone of influence for its capital, Toulouse, one of a handful of so-called "balancing metropolises" (métropoles d'équilibre)¹. Another example of this is the region of Rhône-Alpes which was created as the region for Lyon.

La région Midi-Pyrénées (en occitan Miègjorn-Pirenèus) regroupe huit départements : l’Ariège, l’Aveyron, la Haute-Garonne, les Hautes-Pyrénées, le Gers, le Lot, le Tarn et le Tarn-et-Garonne. C’est la deuxième plus grande région de France (derrière la Guyane) avec huit départements et plus de km². Sa plus grande ville est Toulouse qui est également sa préfecture.

Sie grenzt im Süden an Spanien und Andorra, im Westen an die Region Aquitanien, im Osten an Languedoc-Roussillon und im Norden an die Auvergne und das Limousin.Die Region besteht aus den Départements Ariège (09), Aveyron (12), Haute-Garonne (31), Gers (32), Lot (46), Hautes-Pyrénées (65), Tarn (81) und Tarn-et-Garonne (82). Sie hat eine Fläche von 45.348 km² und ca. 2,3 Millionen Einwohner. Sitz des Regionalrates ist Toulouse.Der Name der Region ist eine Neuschöpfung, die sich aus Midi (französisch Mittag, Süden, auch als allgemeine Bezeichnung für Südfrankreich gebräuchlich) und dem französischen Namen der Pyrenäen (Pyrénées) zusammensetzt.
