The microbats constitute the suborder Microchiroptera within the order Chiroptera (bats). They are most often referred to by their scientific name. Other English names are "insectivorous bats", "echolocating bats", "small bats" or "true bats". All these names are somewhat inaccurate, because not all microbats feed on insects, and some of them are larger than small megabats.

Die Fledermäuse (Microchiroptera) sind eine Säugetiergruppe, die zusammen mit den Flughunden (Megachiroptera) die Ordnung der Fledertiere (Chiroptera) bilden. Zu dieser Ordnung gehören die einzigen Säugetiere und neben den Vögeln die einzigen Wirbeltiere, die aktiv fliegen können. Weltweit gibt es rund 900 Fledermausarten.

Les Microchiroptères constituent un sous-ordre des Chiroptères ou Chauves-Souris. On les appelle également "Chauves-Souris insectivores", "Chauves-Souris qui utilisent l'écholocation", "Petites Chauves-Souris" ou "Vraies Chauves-Souris". Tous ces noms sont cependant inadaptés car tous les Microchiroptères ne sont pas insectivores et certains sont plus gros que les plus petits Mégachiroptères.

Podstawowa różnica między Microchiroptera a Megachiroptera polega na tym, że:

• Microchiroptera nie mają pazura na drugim palcu kończyny przedniej,
• uszy Microchiroptera nie tworzą zamkniętego pierścienia i u podstawy ucha brzegi małżowiny są od siebie oddzielone,
• Microchiroptera nie mają włosów wełnistych.
