Michelle Bachelet

Verónica Michelle Bachelet Jeria (born September 29 1951) is a center-left politician and the current President of Chile—the first woman to hold this position in the country's history. She won the 2006 presidential election in a runoff, beating center-right billionaire businessman and former senator Sebastián Piñera, with 53.5% of the vote. A moderate Socialist, she campaigned on a platform of continuing Chile's free market policies, while increasing social benefits to help reduce the country's gap between rich and poor, one of the largest in the world. She was inaugurated on March 11 2006.

März 2006 die erste Präsidentin Chiles. Ihre Partei, die Sozialistische Partei, gehört der Concertación de Partidos por la Democracia an, dem Mitte-Links-Bündnis von Christdemokraten und Sozialisten und gilt als gemäßigt wirtschaftsliberal. Bachelet hat drei Kinder. Sie spricht auch Deutsch, Englisch, Portugiesisch, Französisch und etwas Russisch.

Verónica Michelle Bachelet Jeria (ur. 29 września 1951 w Santiago) - chilijska polityk lewicowa, członkini Socjalistycznej Partii Chile, prezydent Chile od 11 marca 2006. Michelle Bachelet jest córką chilijskiego generała, który w 1973 po zamachu stanu Pinocheta został osadzony w więzieniu pod zarzutem zdrady kraju. Poddawany torturom, zmarł w marcu 1974. W więzieniu (Villa Grimaldi) znalazła się również jej matka i sama Bachelet. Wypuszczone w 1975, zdecydowały się wyjechać do Australii. Wkrótce Michelle Bachelet wyjechała do NRD, gdzie uczyła się niemieckiego, a później kontynuowała, rozpoczęte jeszcze w Chile, studia medyczne na Uniwersytecie Humboldta w Berlinie. W 1979 powróciła do ojczyzny, gdzie ukończyła studia medyczne i rozpoczęła praktykę lekarską. W latach 80. zaangażowała się ponownie w działalność na rzecz demokracji.

Primo presidente donna del suo Paese, in carica dall'11 marzo 2006, ha vinto al ballottaggio le elezioni presidenziali del Cile opposta all'imprenditore Sebastián Piñera, con il 53% dei voti. La Bachelet è stata anche ministro della sanità e ministro della difesa con il precedente presidente, Ricardo Lagos.
