Methylated spirit

Denatured alcohol is ethanol which has been rendered toxic or otherwise undrinkable, and in some cases dyed. It is used for purposes such as fuel for spirit burners and camping stoves, and as a solvent. Traditionally, the main additive was 10% methanol, which gave rise to methylated spirits. There are diverse industrial uses for ethanol, and therefore literally hundreds of recipes for denaturing ethanol. Typical additives are methanol, isopropanol, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, denatonium, and even (uncommonly) aviation gasoline.

L'alcool dénaturé est généralement de l'alcool éthylique auquel est rajouté un dénaturant pour rendre le mélange impropre à la consommation. Parmi les dénaturants, on peut citer le méthanol, le diéthylphtalate, le thiophène ou le diéthyléther. Les dénaturants sont obligatoirement associés à l'éthanol, sauf dans le secteur de l'alimentaire à cause de leur toxicité à haute dose.

Denaturat inaczej spirytus skażony to wodny roztwór alkoholu etylowego (zawierający 92% alkoholu) dostępny w handlu i przeznaczony do celów innych niż spożywcze.Nazwa de-naturat wskazuje, że nie jest to czysty alkohol etylowy, lecz celowo skażony. Otrzymywany jest poprzez dodanie do spirytusu surowego substancji skażającej, na przykład denatonium lub pirydyny mającej uniemożliwić celowe spożycie tego produktu (np. poprzez nadanie mu odrażającego smaku, zapachu lub właściwości wymiotnych), jak również uniemożliwić jego opłacalne oczyszczenie do postaci spożywczej (poprzez dodanie innych cieczy o podobnej temperaturze wrzenia, lub tworzących z alkoholem mieszaninę azeotropową) oraz często intensywnego barwnika (np. czerwonego, fioletowego). Dzięki temu denaturat może być traktowany jako środek gospodarczy i sprzedawany znacznie taniej od spożywczych wyrobów spirytusowych (objętych akcyzą).

Spiritus of brandspiritus is een alcohol die gebruikt wordt als schoonmaakmiddel en brandstof. Spiritus bestaat grotendeels uit ethanol. Aan spiritus is een giftige stof toegevoegd (meestal methanol) die het drinken ervan gevaarlijk maakt, en daarnaast een blauwe kleurstof om de zo behandelde alcohol goed herkenbaar te maken. Over zo behandelde alcohol hoeft dan geen accijns te worden betaald. De samenstelling van brandspiritus is doorgaans: 85% ethanol, 10% water, 3% methanol, 1% aceton en 1% pyridine (geurstof) plus blauwe kleurstof.
