Methan

Methane is a chemical compound with the molecular formula . It is the simplest alkane, and the principal component of natural gas. Methane's bond angles are 109.5 degrees. Burning one molecule of methane in the presence of oxygen releases one molecule of (carbon dioxide) and two molecules of : Methane's relative abundance and clean burning process makes it a very attractive fuel. However, because it is a gas (at normal temperature and pressure - see, STP) and not a liquid or solid, methane is difficult to transport from the areas that produce it to the areas that consume it. Converting methane to derivatives that are more easily transported, such as  methanol, is an active area of research. Certain microorganisms can effect this selective oxidation using enzymes called methane monooxygenases.

Methan (auch Sumpfgas und Methylwasserstoff genannt) ist ein farbloses und geruchloses Gas. Das Wort stammt wohl aus dem griechischen "Μεθάνιον αέριον" (Methanion Aerion) und zeigt, dass auch die Griechen schon von dem entzündlichen Gas wussten. So gab es in Kleinasien Orte, an denen sich Methangas-Quellen entzündeten. Ein Vulkangebiet, in dem solche Gase vorkamen, bekam nach diesem Gas auch den Namen "Methana". Es ist das einfachste Alkan und der einfachste Kohlenwasserstoff überhaupt, die Summenformel lautet CH4, die C–H-Bindungen weisen in die Ecken eines Tetraeders. Methan ist der Hauptbestandteil von Erdgas und Biogas und ein wichtiger Bestandteil von Holzgas. Nach Kohlenstoffdioxid ist es das bedeutendste von Menschen freigesetzte Treibhausgas, wobei es 20 bis 30 mal wirkungsvoller ist, allerdings in kleineren Mengen in der Atmosphäre vorkommt. Dort reagiert es mit Sauerstoff zu Kohlenstoffdioxid und Wasser. Dieser Prozess ist allerdings langsam, die Halbwertszeit wird auf 14 Jahre geschätzt. Methan wird als Heizgas verwendet und dient als Ausgangspunkt für viele andere organische Verbindungen. Methan wird bei biologischen und geologischen Prozessen ständig neu gebildet und freigesetzt.

Metan (CH4), znany także jako gaz błotny i gaz kopalniany to najprostszy węglowodór nasycony (alkan). W temperaturze pokojowej jest bezwonnym i bezbarwnym gazem. Metan powstaje w przyrodzie w wyniku beztlenowego rozkładu szczątek roślinnych (np. na bagnach). Stanowi też główny składnik gazu ziemnego. Jest stosowany jako gaz opałowy i surowiec do syntezy wielu innych związków organicznych.Cząsteczka metanu ma kształt tetraedru (czworościanu foremnego). Atom węgla wykazuje hybrydyzację sp3. Powstałe orbitale tworzą wiązania z czterema atomami wodoru. Wszystkie te wiązania są równocenne (kąty pomiędzy wiązaniami wynoszą 109°28') i bardzo słabo spolaryzowane, co w połączeniu z brakiem wolnych par elektronowych jest powodem względnej trwałości chemicznej tego związku. Może on uczestniczyć tylko w typowych dla alkanów reakcjach (np: spalanie).
