Mestre

Mestre is a town in Veneto, northern Italy, a frazione of the comune of Venice. Located on the mainland, together with the neighbouring Marghera, Chirignago, Favaro Veneto and Zelarino it includes c. 170,000 inhabitants of the comune, the islands of Venice proper accounting for c. 90,000.The city is connected to Venice by a large rail and road bridge, called Ponte della Libertà (Freedom Bridge).Mestre is the largest city in Italy not to have the status of autonomous comune.

Mestre ist ein Teil der Stadt Venedig, auch wenn sie aufgrund der Größe und räumlichen Entfernung als eigene Stadt bezeichnet werden kann. In Mestre leben rund 200.000 Menschen (zum Vergleich: in Venedig leben ca. 60.000). Herz der Stadt ist die Piazza Ferretto nahe dem Fluss Marzenego. Die Wirtschaft wird vor allem durch das nahe Industriegebiet Marghera angetrieben. Ferner ist Mestre der eigentliche Eisenbahnknotenpunkt von Venedig, von wo eine vierspurige Stichbahn zum auf der Insel gelegenen Hauptbahnhof Venezia Santa Lucia führt und dessen stillgelegter Rangierbahnhof heute nur mehr als Güterbahnhof für den örtlichen Bedarf genutzt wird. Mestre und Marghera werden auch als die "hässlichen Schwestern" Venedigs bezeichnet.

Mestre - administracyjnie część Wenecji (Włochy), jednak często uważane za osobne miasto. W przeciwieństwie do starego centrum Wenecji, położonego na bagnistej lagunie, Mestre znajduje się na stałym lądzie. Z Wenecją właściwą połączone jest tylko przez Most Wolności (Ponte della Libertà). Ta geograficzna rozdzielność, jak również jego rozmiary i liczba ludności (Mestre - ok. 200 tys, Wenecja właściwa - ok. 70 tys.) przemawia za tym by traktować Mestre i Wenecję jako osobne miasta.
