Messerschmitt Me 262

The Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe (German: "Swallow") was the world's first operational turbojet fighter aircraft. It was produced in World War II and saw action starting in 1944 as a multi-role fighter/bomber/reconnaissance/interceptor warplane for the Luftwaffe. It was officially named Schwalbe because the swallow, when in a dive, is one of the fastest birds known. German pilots nicknamed it the "Turbo," while the Allies called it the "Stormbird." While the Me 262 had a negligible impact on the course of the war, with 509 claimed Allied kills, (although higher claims are sometimes made) for more than 100 Me 262 losses, its design had a strong influence on postwar aircraft development.

Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe – (niem. jaskółka), pierwszy użyty bojowo samolot myśliwski o napędzie odrzutowym. Produkowany masowo podczas II wojny światowej przez Niemcy wszedł do służby w 1944 roku jako samolot bombowy i rozpoznawczy (A-1a), a także jako myśliwiec przechwytujący (A-2a). Przez pilotów niemieckich został nazywany Turbo, a wśród aliantów zachodnich znany jako Stormbird (ang. burzowy ptak). Ze względu na późne wprowadzenie tego samolotu do uzbrojenia, jego wpływ na działania wojenne był nieznaczny. Messerschmitty Me 262 uzyskały jedynie 900 zestrzeleń przy stratach własnych 100 maszyn.

Il Messerschmitt Me 262 è stato il primo aereo da caccia della storia con motore a getto ad entrare in servizio durante la Seconda guerra mondiale. Le versione da caccia era denominata Schwalbe, rondine in tedesco, la versione da bombardamento Sturmvogel, uccello delle tempeste. Era una delle armi segrete con cui Hitler voleva ribaltare l'andamento della guerra, ma l'impiego in un ruolo sbagliato e la limitata produzione impedì a questo aereo di contrastare in modo rilevante l'avanzata alleata.
