Mercury is the innermost of the eight planets in the Solar System. It is also the smallest, and its orbit has the highest eccentricity of the eight. It orbits the Sun once in about 88 Earth days, completing three rotations about its axis for every two orbits. Mercury has the smallest axial tilt of the Solar System planets. The perihelion of Mercury's orbit precesses around the Sun at an excess of 43 arcseconds per century beyond what is predicted by Newtonian mechanics, a phenomenon that was explained in the 20th century by Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity.

Der Merkur ist mit einem Durchmesser von knapp 4880 km der kleinste und mit einer durchschnittlichen Sonnenentfernung von etwa 58 Millionen km der sonnennächste und somit auch der schnellste Planet im Sonnensystem. Er hat mit einer maximalen Tagestemperatur von rund +430 °C und einer Nachttemperatur von bis zu -170 °C die größten Temperaturschwankungen aller Planeten.

Elle ne possède aucun satellite naturel. Sa magnitude apparente varie entre -0,4 et 5,5. Mercure est une planète difficile à observer car elle est proche du Soleil et n'est donc observable qu'au lever et au coucher de celui-ci.

Merkurius är den innersta och minsta planeten i solsystemet och har en omloppstid runt solen på 88 dagar. På grund av sin närhet till solen är den svår att observera från jorden och kan bara ses i gryning eller skymning, men Merkurius har ändå varit känd i åtminstone 5 000 år. Planeten saknar, liksom Venus, naturliga satelliter (månar).
