Menuas of Urartu

Menua was the fifth known king of Urartu, an ancient country in the Armenian Highland, from ca 810 to 785 BC. A younger son of the preceding Urartan king Ishpuinis, he was made a co-ruler by his father in the last years of his reign. Menua enlarged the kingdom greatly in numerous wars against the neighbouring countries and left a large number of inscriptions over a wide area. He established the outlines of the empire, and organized the centralized administrative structure, fortified a number of cities and founded fortresses, among them Menuakhinil at the Mount Ararat. The canal and irrigation system of the kingdom was heavily developed by him, one canal remaining in use to this day.

Menua (auch Menuas oder Minua) war ein urartäischer König, der ungefähr von 810 bis 785 v. Chr. regierte. Er war der jüngere Sohn seines Vorgängers Išpuini und zehn Jahre lang sein Mitregent. Menua führte Feldzüge gegen die Mannäer und besiegte sie am Urmia-See, er erreichte den Aras und ließ in Mešta einen Palast errichten. Dies berichtet eine urartäische Inschrift von Taschtepe bei Cillik. Menua gründete die Residenz Menuachinili am Berg Ararat, während Tušpa (heute Van) die Hauptstadt des Urartäerreiches blieb. Es ist zudem bekannt, dass Menua die landwirtschaftliche Nutzfläche in Urartu erweiterte und neue Bewässerungskanäle bauen ließ. Nachfolger war sein Sohn Argišti I., der die Expansionspolitik erfolgreich fortführte.

Menua - król Urartu w latach 815-790 p.n.e. Początkowo rządził jako współregent z ojcem Sarduri I. Założył twierdzę Musasir , znaną z tekstów urartyjskich jako Ardini. Opanował tereny na południe od jeziora Urmia. W kampaniach wojennych dotarł do Eufratu, zmuszając do przyjęcia jego zwierzchnictwa posthetyckie państewka w Syrii. Przekroczył rzekę Araks na północy i zają tereny aż do jeziora Sewan. Bogate łupy i niewolnicy pozwoliły na podjecie szeregu prac budowlanych: zamków, warowni i kanału zaopatrującego Tuszpę w słodką wodę.
