Geist (griech. pneuma, nous und auch psyche, lat. spiritus, mens, animus bzw. anima, hebr. ruach und arab. ruh, engl. mind, spirit, franz. ésprit) ist ein – bis in die Philosophie (Deutscher Idealismus, Philosophie des Geistes), aber auch in andere Wissenschaften wie die Psychologie und Theologie hinein – uneinheitlich verwendeter Begriff der Allgemein- oder Umgangssprache. Im Deutschen kann mit dem Ausdruck Geist auch Gespenst gemeint sein; Heiliger Geist wird in der christlichen Vorstellungswelt dagegen der als Person gedachte "Geist Gottes" genannt.
