Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis is a city in the southwest corner of Tennessee, and the county seat of Shelby County. Memphis rises above the Mississippi River on the 4th Chickasaw Bluff just below the mouth of the Wolf River. As of 2006, Memphis had an estimated population of 670,902, making it the largest city in the state of Tennessee, the second largest in the southeastern region (only to Jacksonville, Florida), and the 17th largest in the United States . The greater Memphis metropolitan area area, including the adjacent areas of Mississippi and Arkansas, has a population of 1,260,581. This makes Memphis the second largest metropolitan area in Tennessee, surpassed only by metropolitan Nashville. Memphis is the youngest of Tennessee's four major cities (traditionally including Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Nashville). A resident of Memphis is referred to as a Memphian and the Memphis region is known as the Mid-South.

Die Stadt liegt im äußersten Südwesten Tennessees direkt am Ostufer des Mississippi River und hat 672.000 Einwohner.Memphis ist eine der Metropolen der klassischen Südstaaten. Fragen der selbst beschriebenen „Rassenzugehörigkeit“ spielen sowohl im täglichen Leben der Stadt als auch in der Politik eine wichtige Rolle. Nachdem Memphis bis in 1870er hinein und auch im US-amerikanischen Sezessionskrieg florierte, suchten mehrere Katastrophen die Stadt heim. In jüngster Zeit verdankt sie ihren wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung vor allem der Transportfirma FedEx, die mit Abstand größter Arbeitgeber der Stadt ist.

Miasto ma 650 tys. mieszkańców, obszar metropolitalny 1,2 mln mieszkańców (dane z 2000).Nazwa pochodzi od miasta Memfis w starożytnym Egipcie.Największą atrakcją turystyczną miasta jest Graceland, posiadłość Elvisa Presleya, w której mieszkał przez wiele lat, w której umarł i został pochowany. Inną wielką atrakcją jest ulica Beale, miejsce klubów bluesowych. W Memphis rozpoczynali swoją karierę w latach 50. XX wieku B. B. King i Johnny Cash. Wielu innych artystów amerykańskiej sceny muzycznej również rozpoczynało swoją karierę w tym mieście.
