The melting point of a solid is the temperature at which it changes state from solid to liquid. At the melting point the solid and liquid phase exist in equilibrium. The melting point of a substance depends (usually slightly) on pressure and is usually specified at standard pressure. When considered as the temperature of the reverse change from liquid to solid, it is referred to as the freezing point or crystallization point. Because of the ability of some substances to supercool, the freezing point is not considered as a characteristic property of a substance. When the "characteristic freezing point" of a substance is determined, in fact the actual methodology is almost always "the principle of observing the disappearance rather than the formation of ice", that is, the melting point.

Melting, or fusion, is a physical process that results in the phase change of a substance from a solid to a liquid. The internal energy of a substance is increased, typically by the application of heat or pressure, resulting in a rise of its temperature to the melting point, at which the rigid ordering of molecular entities in the solid breaks down to a less-ordered state and the solid liquefies. An object that has melted completely is molten. Substances in the molten state generally have reduced viscosity with elevated temperature; an exception to this maxim is the element sulfur, whose viscosity increases with higher temperatures in its molten state.

Als Schmelztemperatur bezeichnet man die Temperatur, bei der ein Stoff schmilzt, das heißt vom festen in den flüssigen Aggregatzustand übergeht. Die Schmelztemperatur ist abhängig vom Stoff, im Gegensatz zur Siedetemperatur aber nur sehr wenig vom Druck (Schmelzdruck). Schmelztemperatur und Druck werden zusammen als Schmelzpunkt bezeichnet, wobei dieser den Zustand eines Reinstoffes beschreibt und Teil der Schmelzkurve im Phasendiagramm des Stoffes ist.

Smältpunkt eller fryspunkt är den temperatur vid vilken ett ämne övergår från fast till flytande form. Vid temperaturer under smältpunkten är ämnet fast och över smältpunkten är det flytande. Det går dock åt energi för själva övergången mellan fast och flytande form, se smältvärme.

Temperatura topnienia to temperatura przy której kryształ zamienia się w ciecz. Jest to też najwyższa możliwa temperatura, przy której może rozpocząć się krystalizacja tej samej substancji. Krystalizacja zachodzi jednak często przy niższej temperaturze niż temperatura topnienia, co zależy od wielu czynników, np. tempa schładzania.
