Megalith

A megalith is a large stone which has been used to construct a structure or monument, either alone or together with other stones. Megalithic means structures made of such large stones, utilizing an interlocking system without the use of mortar or cement. The word megalith comes from the Ancient Greek  megas meaning great, and lithos meaning stone. Many megaliths are thought to have a purpose in determining important astronomical events such as the dates of the solstices and equinoxes. "Megalith" also denotes item(s) consisting of rock(s) hewn in definite shapes for special purposes. It has been used to describe buildings built by people from many parts of the world living in many different periods. A variety of large stones are seen as megaliths, with the most widely known megaliths not being sepulchral. The construction of these structures took place mainly in the Neolithic (though earlier Mesolithic examples are known) and continued into the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age.

Un mégalithe est un monument constitué d’une ou plusieurs pierres de grandes dimensions répartis en cercles, érigées (ou levées) par les hommes, généralement au cours de la préhistoire, sans l’aide de mortier ou de ciment pour fixer la structure. Als Megalithen (von altgriechisch μέγας (mégas) „groß“ und λίϑος (líthos) „Stein“) bezeichnet man große, oft unbehauene Steinblöcke, die als Bausteine für Grab- und Kultanlagen benutzt wurden oder als Monolithe aufgerichtet und in Steinsetzungen positioniert wurden. Die west- und nordeuropäischen Megalithbauten wurden alle in der Jungsteinzeit und der frühen Bronzezeit errichtet.

Megalit (gr. wielki kamień) – duży, nieobrobiony lub częściowo obrobiony kamień stanowiący samodzielną budowlę lub element większej budowli z takich kamieni (wykonanej bez użycia zaprawy), o charakterze kultowym, grobowym lub (prawdopodobnie) związanymi z obserwacjami astronomicznymi, wzniesiony w czasach prehistorycznych. Megality znajdują się w różnych miejscach na świecie (Europa, Ameryka, Azja, Australia, wyspy Oceanu Spokojnego). W Europie Zachodniej i obszarze śródziemnomorskim określa się tak konstrukcje kamienne wzniesione w okresie neolitu (będącego najmłodszą fazą epoki kamienia) i epoki miedzi (4500–1500 p.n.e.). Ośrodkami, z których idea budowli megalitycznych przeniosła się na tereny Niemiec, Skandynawii a nawet Polski były: Półwysep Iberyjski, Bretania i Wyspy Brytyjskie. Występujące na tych terenach budowle megalityczne sięgają czasem V w p.n.e. Najbardziej znaną budowlą megalityczną w Europie jest Stonehenge w południowej Anglii, wzniesione w okresie neolitu, ok. 2800 p.n.e.

Een megaliet is een stenen monument uit de neolithische periode. Het woord '"megaliet" is een woord uit het Grieks (mega = groot, lithos = steen) waarmee een groep monumenten wordt aangeduid die uit een of meer grote stenen bestaan.
