Maximum Take-Off Weight

The Maximum Takeoff Weight or Maximum Takeoff Mass of an aircraft is the maximum weight at which the pilot of the aircraft is allowed to attempt to take off. The Maximum Takeoff Weight is the heaviest weight at which the aircraft has been shown to meet all the airworthiness requirements applicable to it. The airworthiness requirements include many related to strength of the structure, and performance. At its Maximum Takeoff Weight an aircraft complies with all the structural and performance requirements applicable to aircraft in its class.

Das Höchstabfluggewicht (engl. maximum take off weight, MTOW) ist das maximale Startgewicht eines Flugzeugs. Dies ist das Gewicht, mit dem das Flugzeug abheben kann, ohne die vorgeschriebenen Sicherheitsreserven zu verletzen.Das maximale Startgewicht kann bei Flugzeugen durch die Verwendung von Starthilfsraketen oder Katapulten (siehe auch Flugzeugträger) erhöht werden. Das MTOW ist durch die Konstruktion oder behördliche Vorgaben festgelegt. Bei Starts von Flugplätzen in großen Höhen (z.B. Quito), bei hohen Temperaturen oder bei kurzen Startbahnen kann sich das maximal erlaubte Startgewicht MATOW (engl. maximum allowed take off weight) jedoch in Abhängigkeit von den Flugleistungen weiter verringern.
