The Matterhorn (German) or Cervino (Italian), (French: Mont Cervin or Le Cervin) is perhaps the most familiar  mountain in the European Alps. On the border between Switzerland and Italy, it towers over the Swiss village of Zermatt and the Italian village Breuil-Cervinia in the Val Tournanche. The mountain derives its name from the German words Matte, meaning valley or meadow, and Horn, which means peak.

Das Matterhorn (walliserdeutsch ds'Hore, italienisch Monte Cervino oder Cervino, französisch Mont Cervin oder Le Cervin) ist mit 4478 Metern Höhe der siebthöchste Berg der Alpen (Mont Blanc und Monte Rosa als Gruppe berücksichtigt).Es steht in den Walliser Alpen zwischen Zermatt und Breuil (Cervinia). Die Ost-, Nord- und Westwand liegen auf schweizerischem, die Südwand auf italienischem Staatsgebiet. Wegen seiner markanten Gestalt und seiner Besteigungsgeschichte ist es einer der bekanntesten Berge der Welt. Für die Schweiz ist das Matterhorn das Wahrzeichen schlechthin sowie die meistfotografierte Touristenattraktion. Der markante dreieckige Gipfelkopf diente der bekannten Schokoladenfirma Tobler als Muster für ihre „Toblerone“. 1959 wurde im Disneyland  eine Nachbildung des Matterhorns im Maßstab 1:100 eröffnet.

Matterhorn – szczyt położony w Alpach sięgający wysokości 4478 metrów. Matterhorn jest szóstym pod względem wysokości samodzielnym szczytem alpejskim. Góra symbol, jeden z najbardziej znanych szczytów świata. Jego skalno-lodowa piramida samotnie wznosi się wśród firnowych pól lodowych Alp Walijskich. Najpóźniej zdobyty ze szczytów alpejskich, głównie ze względu na odstraszający wygląd.Z wierzchołka Matterhornu opadają cztery wybitne granie: grań Hörnli, grań Lion, grań Zmütt oraz grań Furgen.

Il Cervino (4.478 metri), chiamato Mont Cervin in francese e Matterhorn in tedesco, è considerato una delle più famose montagne delle Alpi ed anche una delle più familiari a causa della sua particolare forma piramidale molto pronunciata.
