Matriculation, in the broadest sense, means to be registered or added to a list, from the Latin matricula – little list. In Scottish heraldry, for instance, a matriculation is a registration of armorial bearings. The most common meaning, however, refers to the formal process of entering a university, or of becoming eligible to enter by acquiring the meeting prerequisites.

Die Einschreibung oder Immatrikulation an einer Hochschule ist ein Verwaltungsvorgang, bei dem eine Person als Student an der Hochschule aufgenommen und damit Mitglied dieser Hochschule wird. Die Immatrikulation erfolgt beim Studierendensekretariat oder Immatrikulationsamt einer Hochschule, der Student wird dann in der Universitätsmatrikel geführt. In Österreich ist zusätzlich zur einmaligen Zulassung zum Studium (Immatrikulation) auch für jedes Semester eine Inskription für das jeweilige Studium erforderlich.

Immatrykulacja (łac. immatriculare - "wciągnąć do spisu") - wpisanie, tudzież zaliczenie w poczet studentów uczelni wyższej; także uroczystość przyjęcia nowych studentów na I rok studiów. Termin ten oznacza także wniesienie do spisu  szlachty w danym kraju czy prowincji.
