Material

Materials are physical substances used as inputs to production or manufacturing. Materials range from man made synthetics such as many plastics to natural materials such as copper or  wood.Raw materials, materials in their unaltered, natural state, are first extracted or harvested from the earth and divided into a form that can be easily transported and stored. The raw materials are then processed to produce "semi-finished materials". These can be input into a new cycle of production and finishing processes to create "finished materials", ready for distribution and consumption.

Un matériau est une matière d'origine naturelle ou artificielle que l'homme façonne pour en faire des objets.Un matériau est donc une matière de base sélectionnée en raison de propriétés particulières et mise en œuvre en vue d'un usage spécifique.La nature chimique, la forme physique (phases en présence, granulométrie et forme des particules, par exemple), l'état de surface, des différentes matières premières qui sont à la base des matériaux confère à ceux-ci des propriétés particulières. On distingue ainsi quatre grandes familles de matériaux : Les matériaux minéraux sont des roches, des céramiques ou des verres. Les matériaux métalliques sont des  métaux ou des alliages de métaux.

Material ist in der Fertigungstechnik ein Sammelbegriff für Rohstoffe, Werkstoffe, Halbzeuge, Hilfsstoffe, Betriebsstoffe, Bauteile und Baugruppen. Es ist der Grundstoff zur Produktion oder Herstellung bestimmter Erzeugnisse bzw. Produkte.Meist liegt das Material in Rohform vor, manchmal ist auch eine Vorbearbeitung nötig (z. B. bei  Textilien – Spinnen und Weben). Grob gesagt kann man Material als nicht fertiges Gebrauchsgut oder als Arbeitsgegenstand des Menschen bei der Arbeit bezeichnen. In der Materialwissenschaft unterscheidet man Material nach der stofflichen Zusammensetzung und den jeweiligen Bearbeitungs- und Gebrauchseigenschaften, also neben den Werkstoffen z. B.  Naturstein, Metall, Textilien, Beton, Papier, Kohle, Salze und Gase.

W najbardziej ogólnym sensie jest to surowiec w postaci pierwotnej lub częściowo przetworzony, z którego wytwarza się różne produkty. w języku potocznym nazwą tą określa się tkaniny.W dziedzinie naukowo-technicznej nazywanej badaniami materiałowymi materiał definiuje się jako każdą substancję, z której zrobione są analizowane wyroby.Wyróżnia się materiały konstrukcyjne, czyli takie, które wykorzystuje się do budowy urządzeń zwielokrotniających siłę ludzkich mięśni oraz materiały funkcjonalne stosowane do budowy urządzeń zwielokrotniających działanie ludzkiego umysłu.

Een materiaal is een natuurlijke of kunstmatig geproduceerde stof die bestemd is om verwerkt te worden tot bruikbare producten. Een materiaal is dus een stoffelijke zaak, die geselecteerd wordt op basis van zijn eigenschappen met het oog op een bepaalde toepassing. De term materiaal wordt gewoonlijk alleen gebruikt, als de verwerkte stof nog aan te wijzen is in onderdelen van het eindproduct. Anders spreekt men eerder van grondstof of ingrediënt.
