The Atlantic Forest is a region of tropical and subtropical moist forest, tropical dry forest, tropical savanna, semi-deciduous forest and mangrove forests which extends along the Atlantic coast of Brazil from Rio Grande do Norte state in the north to Rio Grande do Sul state in the south, and inland as far as Paraguay and the Misiones Province of Argentina. The Atlantic Forest is characterized by a high species diversity and endemism. It was the first environment that the Portuguese conquerors encountered over 500 years ago when it was thought to have had an area of and stretching an unknown distance inland. Currently, the Atlantic Forest spans over along the coast of Brazil and in a small part of Paraguay and Argentina. In Argentina, it is known as Selva Atlántica.

Die Mata Atlântica ist eine Vegetationsform in Brasilien. Der «atlantische Regenwald» erstreckte sich einst flächendeckend über die gesamte Ostküste Brasiliens von Rio Grande do Norte bis Rio Grande do Sul, aber auch ins Innere bis Goiás und Mato Grosso do Sul, im Süden reichte er bis nach Argentinien und Paraguay.

La forêt atlantique (en portugais mata atlântica ) est une formation végétale de type forêt tropicale humide du Brésil. Elle s'étendait tout au long du littoral du pays, du Rio Grande do Sul au Rio Grande do Norte. Dans les régions du sud, elle arrivait jusqu'en Argentine et au Paraguay. A cause de la déforestation, principalement depuis le , elle se trouve aujourd'hui extrèmement réduite en superficie, et constitue une des forêts tropicales les plus menacées au monde. Malgré son étendue réduite à quelques fragments, globalement discontinus, la biodiversité de son écosystème est extrême. Elle couvrait d'importantes espaces de montagnes et collines dans les hauts-plateaux, spécialement au Brésil.

Mata Atlântica - wąski obszar bujnych lasów deszczowych na południowo-wschodnim atlantyckim pobrzeżu Brazylii. Ostoja wielu gatunków zagrożonych wymarciem, w tym leniwca grzywiastego. Pierwotnie (przed ingerencją europejskich osadników w 1500 roku) obejmował prawdopodobnie 1,4 miliona km², czyli około 1/5 obecnego obszaru Amazonii, położonej 800 km na północny zachód od niego, i rozciągał się od stanu Rio Grande do Sul po obecną granicę z Urugwajem, czasem wchodząc w głąb lądu na 300 km. Północną granicę Mata Atlantica wyznacza obszar wpływów zimnego Prądu Falklandzkiego. Swój klimat, wilgotny i ciepły, zawdzięcza Mata Atlantica dwóm ciepłym prądom oceanicznym: Prądowi Brazylijskiemu i Prądowi Południoworównikowemu.

A Mata Atlântica é uma formação vegetal brasileira. Acompanhava o litoral do país do Rio Grande do Sul ao Rio Grande do Norte (regiões meridional e nordeste). Nas regiões Sul e Sudeste chegava até Argentina e Paraguai. Em função do desmatamento, principalmente a partir do século XX, encontra-se hoje extremamente reduzida, sendo uma das florestas tropicais mais ameaçadas do globo. Apesar de reduzida a poucos fragmentos, na sua maioria descontínuos, a biodiversidade de seu ecossistema é uma dos maiores do planeta. Cobria importantes trechos de serras e escarpas do Planalto Brasileiro, e era contínua com a Floresta Amazônica. Foi a segunda maior floresta tropical em ocorrência e importância na América do Sul, em especial no Brasil.
