Mashhad

Subscript text Mashhad (, literally the place of martyrdom) is the second largest city in Persia and one of the holiest cities in the Shiah world. It is located 850 kilometers (500 miles) east of Tehran, Iran (Persia), at the center of the Razavi Khorasan Province. Its population is 2,387,734 people (2006).[1]  It was also the source of religious persecution of Jews in the 19th Century.

Maschhad (Meschhed, Mashad oder Masched, //) ist die Hauptstadt des iranischen Bundesstaates Razavi-Chorasan und die zweitgrößte Stadt Irans. Sie liegt 850 km östlich von  Teheran auf einer Höhe von rund am Fluss Kashaf.Maschhad gilt als eine der sieben heiligen Stätten des schiitischen Islams, weil dort die heilige Goharshaad-Moschee liegt. Die Stadt ist ein wichtiges politisches und religiöses Zentrum, jährlich besuchen sie mehr als 100.000 schiitische Pilger. Die besondere religiöse Bedeutung Maschhads für den Iran ergibt sich aus der Tatsache, dass der hier beerdigte (achte) Imam Reza der einzige der zwölf schiitischen Imame ist, dessen Grabmal sich auf iranischem Boden befindet.

Meszhed - miasto w północno-wschodnim Iranie, drugie co do wielkości miasto tego kraju (1887,4 tys. w 1996) i ważny ośrodek akademicki. Jest również jednym z najświętszych miejsc dla szyitów. Położone jest 850 km na wschód od Teheranu i stanowi centrum prowincji Chorasan. Leży w dolinie rzeki Kaszaf niedaleko od granicy z Turkmenistanem.

La parola persiana mashhad (ﻣﺸﻬﺪ, significa "santuario" e il nome completo dell'omonima città di Mashhad, nel Khorasan  iraniano, è in realtà Mashhad ʿAlī, ovverosia "Il santuario di ʿAlī". Ciò è dovuto al fatto che in essa è ospitato il venerato luogo di sepoltura dell'ottavo Imām dello Sciismo duodecimano), ʿAlī al-Riḍā (che in persiano diventa Reżā).
