Cannabis (Cán-na-bis) is a genus of flowering plants that includes three putative species, Cannabis sativa L., Cannabis indica Lam., and Cannabis ruderalis Janisch. These three taxa are indigenous to central Asia and surrounding regions. Industrial hemp products are made from Cannabis plants selected to produce an abundance of fiber and minimal levels of THC (Δ9- tetrahydrocannabinol), one psychoactive molecule that produces the "high" associated with marijuana. The drug consists of dried flowers and leaves of plants selected to produce high levels of THC. Various extracts including hashish and hash oil are also produced. The cultivation and possession of Cannabis for recreational use is outlawed in most countries.

The herbal form of the drug consists of dried mature flowers and subtending leaves of pistillate ("female") plants. The resinous form, known as hashish, consists primarily of glandular trichomes collected from the same plant material. The major biologically active chemical compound in cannabis is Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), commonly referred to as THC.

Marihuana (auch Marijuana) bezeichnet die getrockneten weiblichen Blütenstände der Hanf-Pflanze mitsamt ihrem anhaftenden Harz, die als Droge konsumiert werden. Die allgemeinen Eigenschaften der Droge und die Rechtslage sind unter Cannabis beschrieben, die Eigenschaften der Pflanze unter Hanf. Eine weitere verbreitete Form dieser Droge ist das Haschisch. Der Wirkstoff ist Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Cannabis ist der lateinische wissenschaftliche Name der Hanfpflanze und wird im Volksmund auch als Sammelbegriff für die aus Hanf hergestellten Rauschmittel, insbesondere Marihuana und Haschisch, verwendet. Il termine marijuana si riferisce alle infiorescenze femminili essiccate e conciate delle piante appartenenti al genotipo THCAS (volgarmente "canapa indica"). In essa sono contenute diverse sostanze stupefacenti psicoattive, tra cui la principale è il Δ⁹-tetraidrocannabinolo. Il materiale vegetale o i preparati che ne contengono, sono considerati facenti parte delle cosiddette "droghe leggere".
