The Margites is a comic mock-epic of Ancient Greece that is largely lost. From references to the work that survived, we know that its central character is an exceedingly dumb man named "Margites" (from ancient Greek , margos, "raving, mad; lustful") who was so dense he did not know which parent had given birth to him. His name gave rise to the recherché adjective margitomanes , "mad as Margites", used by Philodemus.

Margites (Μαργίτης) fue el héroe de un poema cómico épico que se atribuía en la antigüedad a Homero, y así lo consideraban Platón y Aristóteles. Margites era de Colofón, ciudad donde se creía que había nacido Homero. La Suda, en cambio, se lo atribuye a Pigres, hermano de la reina Artemisa I.

Margitész, Margites, a Kr. e. VII-VI. században keletkezett görög epikus költemény, szerzojének Homéroszt vagy Pigrészt tartották. Fohose az ostoba Margitész, aki „sok dolgot tudott, de mindent rosszul tudott". Margitész szülei dúsgazdag emberek voltak, a költemény szerzoje hosében talán az epikus hos komikus fordítottját ábrázolta muvében.
