Marduk (Sumerian spelling in Akkadian: AMAR.UTU "solar calf"; perhaps from MERI.DUG; Biblical Hebrew  Merodach; Greek , Mardochaios) was the Babylonian name of a late-generation god from ancient Mesopotamia and patron deity of the city of Babylon, who, when Babylon became the political center of the Euphrates valley in the time of Hammurabi (18th century BCE), started to slowly rise to the position of the head of the Babylonian pantheon, a position he fully acquired by the second half of the second millennium BCE.

Marduk (sumerisch: ^DINGIRAMAR.UD Jungrind des Utu) war ein Gott der babylonischen Religion. Er war im 3. Jahrtausend v. Chr. in Mesopotamien noch unbekannt und stieg als eingewanderter Gott über den Rang eines unbedeutenden Stadtgottes zur Hauptgottheit der babylonischen Religion und Oberhaupt des babylonischen Pantheons auf. Er trägt u.a. den Titel „Herr der vier Weltgegenden“, der aus dem Sumerischen übernommen wurde.

Marduk (en Akkadien, AMAR.UTU en Sumérien), appelé aussi Bellus ou Baal, est le dieu tutélaire de la ville de Babylone. Il y siégeait dans son sanctuaire l'Esagil « le temple au pinacle surélevé », auquel était adjoint la ziggourat Etemenanki, passée à la postérité comme la Tour de Babel. Sa parèdre était Zarpanîtu, ou Sarpanîtu. Les mésopotamiens en faisaient le fils aîné d’Ea et de la déesse Damkina. Dieu agraire d'importance secondaire à l'origine, Marduk finira par supplanter Enlil (et absorber ses attributions) comme dieu suprême du panthéon. Il acquiert toute son importance sous le règne de  Nabuchodonosor I, souverain de Babylone de 1125 environ à 1104 av. J.-C.. Le Poème de la Création (Enuma Elish), écrit à cette époque, est destiné à justifier cette promotion. On lui associe le dragon (Mushkhushu), la planète Jupiter et le nombre 50 (également attribué à Enlil).
