With 307,640 inhabitants it is the second largest city in the state of Baden-Württemberg after the capital Stuttgart.Mannheim is situated at the confluence of the rivers Rhine and Neckar, in the northwestern corner of the state of Baden-Württemberg. The Rhine separates Mannheim from the adjacent Rhineland-Palatinate city of Ludwigshafen. The Hessian border is north of the city. Mannheim is the largest city of the Rhine Neckar Area, a metropolitan area with 2.4 million inhabitants.

Die Universitätsstadt Mannheim ist mit etwa 310.000 Einwohnern nach Stuttgart die zweitgrößte Stadt Baden-Württembergs. Die ehemalige Residenzstadt (1720-1778) der historischen Kurpfalz bildet das wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Zentrum der Europäischen Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar-Dreieck. Von seiner rheinland-pfälzischen Nachbarstadt Ludwigshafen (160.000 Einwohner) ist Mannheim nur durch den Rhein getrennt.

Ważny port śródlądowy (przeładunek 8,6 mln t w 1988) i port lotniczy. Występuje przemysł maszynowy (silniki, maszyny rolnicze), środków transportu (fabryka Mercedes-Benz), elektrotechniczny, chemiczny (w tym farmaceutyczny), precyzyjny, włókienniczy i spożywczy. Znajduje się tu rafineria ropy naftowej, duża elektrownia cieplna (1650 MW) oraz elektrownia wodna.
