Manhattan

Manhattan is a borough of New York City, New York, USA, with New York County. With a 2000 population of 1,537,195 living in a land area of 22.96 square miles (59.47 km²), it is the most  densely populated county in the United States at 66,940 residents per square mile (25,846/km²). The borough consists of Manhattan Island, Roosevelt Island, several much smaller islands, and a small section on the mainland adjacent to the Bronx.

Manhattan est l'une des circonscriptions (borough) de la ville de New York (les quatre autres étant Brooklyn, le Queens, le Bronx et Staten Island). La circonscription de Manhattan se superpose avec le comté de New York (New York County). Il correspond en grande partie à l'île de Manhattan qui a une superficie de . Manhattan est bien une île, et non une presqu'île. Elle est entourée par l'Hudson River à l'ouest, l'East River à l'est, l'Upper New York Bay au sud, et l'Harlem River au nord. Manhattan est la partie la plus dense et la plus riche de New York, ce qui en fait le borough le plus touristique de Big Apple. C'est également le quartier le mieux desservi par le métro de New York, puisque toutes les lignes y transitent, à l'exception de la ligne G. En 2000, sa population était de habitants, et sa densité très supérieure à celle de tout autre comté des États-Unis. Manhattan est mondialement célèbre pour ses gratte-ciels et son activité trépidante.

Manhattan [] ist eine Insel an der Mündung des Hudson River, einer der fünf Stadtbezirke (Boroughs) der Stadt New York und deckt sich mit New York County. Die Insel Manhattan Island wird vom Hudson River im Westen, vom East River im Osten und vom Harlem River im Nordosten umflossen. Zum Borough Manhattan gehören außerdem noch weitere kleinere Inseln, darunter Roosevelt Island, Belmont Island, Governors Island, Randall's/Wards's Island und ein kleines Stück am Festland, Marble Hill. Marble Hill war bis zum Bau des Harlem River Ship Canal im 19. Jahrhundert noch Teil von Manhattan Island.

Manhattan to jedna z pięciu dzielnic (Boroughs) Nowego Jorku oraz zarazem stanowy powiat (county) o nazwie New York. Znajdują się w niej zarówno liczne atrakcje turystyczne, jak i centrum finansowe (Wall Street). Manhattan jest najdroższą dzielnicą Nowego Jorku zamieszkałą przez ponad 1.6 mln (2006) ludzi. Mieszkają tu także bogaci biznesmeni, bankierzy, maklerzy giełdowi (na UES), jak i część nowojorskiej bohemy artystycznej (Soho, Tribeca). W szczytowym okresie napływu emigrantów (1910) wyspę zamieszkiwało 2.8 mln osób. Miasto sprawia wrażenie bardzo zgęszczonego i zatłoczonego, ze względu na codzienny napływ milionów ludzi dojeżdżających do pracy z innych dzielnic oraz z obszarów podmiejskich jak i kilkuset tysięczną rzeszą turystów skupiającą się w newralgicznych punktach miasta. Manhattan umownie dzieli się na 3 części: Downtown, Midtown i Uptown, z Piątą Aleją będącą granicą między częścią wschodnią (East Side) a zachodnią (West Side). W/w Uptown w potocznym znaczeniu nie obejmuje bezpośrednio na północ położonego Harlemu oraz jeszcze wyżej usytuowanego Washington Heights. Powszechnie stosowaną nazwę Manhattan (pochodzenia indiańskiego) używa się niekiedy wymiennie z New York lub New York City (ale tym w granicach Manhattanu).

Manhattan è un'isola su cui sorge l'omonimo distretto (borough) della città di New York, di cui costituisce il nucleo storico (gli altri distretti sono Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn e Staten Island). Corrisponde alla "contea di New York", con 1.547.000 abitanti. Il nome deriva dall'indiano e significa "zona fra le colline".
