Overview
Manchesters are affectionate with their families but reserved with strangers and can be nippy and protective of their food bowls. They are accepting of gentle children over about eight years old and, if socialized with them early, small animals such as cats. Although they usually get along with other dogs, some may try to be dominant or aggressive. Therefore, they must be obedience trained and socialized early. They will definitely bark when strangers knock on the door. These low-maintenance dogs are ideal for city or apartment living.
Appearance
There are two Manchester varieties: toy and standard. Both have coats that are smooth, short, and glossy, never soft to the touch. Coat color is jet-black or rich dark tan with well-defined boundaries. There is usually a black "thumbprint" patch on the front of each "wrist" area on the forelegs and narrow black stripes called pencil marks on the top of each toe.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
Manchesters require only a quick weekly brushing. They need brisk daily walks or vigorous romps and playtimes with other dogs or their owner in a secured area.
Origins
The Manchester was developed in England in the late 19th century to control rats and to track small game.
Special Alerts
Breed-related health concerns: glaucoma, sensitivity to immunization, skin irritations and infections.
