Mali

Mali, officially the Republic of Mali (French: République du Mali), is a landlocked nation in Western Africa. It is the seventh largest country in Africa. It borders Algeria on the north, Niger on the east, Burkina Faso and the Côte d'Ivoire on the south, Guinea on the south-west, and Senegal and Mauritania on the west. Its straight borders on the north stretch into the centre of the Sahara, while the country's south, where the majority of inhabitants live, features the Niger and Senegal rivers. Formerly French Sudan, the country is named after the Mali Empire. The name of the country comes from the Bambara word for hippopotamus (with the animal appearing on the 5 franc coin), the name of its capital city, Bamako comes from the Bambara word meaning "crocodile swamp".

Le Mali est un pays d'Afrique de l'Ouest ayant des frontières communes avec la Mauritanie et l'Algérie au nord, le Niger à l'est, le Burkina Faso et la Côte d'Ivoire au sud, la Guinée au sud-ouest et le Sénégal à l'ouest. Mali (dt. Aussprache: []; frz.: []) ist ein seit 1960 von Frankreich unabhängiger Staat in Westafrika und grenzt im Norden an Algerien und Mauretanien, im Westen an Senegal und Guinea, im Osten an Niger und im Süden an Burkina Faso und die Elfenbeinküste. Die ehemalige Kolonie Französisch-Sudan hat einen bedeutenden Anteil an der Sahara, sowie an Sahel und dem Sudan. Mali gilt als gelungenes Beispiel einer Demokratisierung in Afrika, ist aber eines der ärmsten und am wenigsten entwickelten Länder der Welt. So belief sich noch 2003 der Anteil der Bevölkerung mit weniger als 1 US-Dollar pro Tag auf 73 % (siehe auch: Tabelle: Die höchste Armut weltweit). Der Landesname Mali wurde in Anlehnung an das gleichnamige mittelalterliche Großreich gewählt. In der einheimischen Sprache Bambara ist Mali außerdem das Wort für das Wappentier des Landes: das Nilpferd.
