Malacostraca

The Malacostraca (Greek: "soft shell") are the largest subgroup of crustaceans and include most of the animals that non-experts recognise as crustaceans, including decapods (such as crabs,  lobsters and shrimp), stomatopods (mantis shrimp) and krill. They also include the amphipods and the only substantial group of land-based crustaceans, the isopods (woodlice and related species). With more than 22,000 members, this group represents two thirds of all crustacean species and contains all the larger forms. The first malacostracans appeared in the Cambrian.

La des Malacostraca — on dit aussi Malacostracea (Malacostracés) — (du grec malakós 'mou' et óstrakon 'coquille') regroupe les crustacés dits « supérieurs », entre autres ceux dont la tête est soudée au thorax et distinct de l’abdomen, tels que les homards, les crabes, les squilles. Ils sont généralement de grande taille. On les opposait autrefois aux autres crustacés, dits « inférieurs » (ancienne classe des entomostraca).

Die Höheren Krebse (Malacostraca) sind mit etwa 28.000 Arten die größte Gruppe innerhalb der Krebstiere und enthalten die meisten Tiere, die Nichtexperten als Krebstiere erkennen, wie Krabben, Hummer und Garnelen. Sie sind bereits ab der Zeit des Kambriums im Fossilbericht nachweisbar.

Della classe Malacostraca (Latreille,1802), che comprende più dei due terzi di tutto il subphylum Crustacea, fanno parte i crostacei più comuni e più conosciuti in quanto commestibili e che, per questo, hanno anche un valore economico, basta ricordare: aragoste, gamberi, granchi, scampi, ecc. Attualmente sono state descritte più di 20.000 specie.
