Makaay has experienced the extremes of triumph and despair in two seasons, the bitter pill of relegation with CD Tenerife being followed by championship success with Deportivo La Coruna. His 14 goals for Tenerife in 1998/99 meant a move to a bigger club was inevitable and he continued finding the net in a wonderful first season with Deportivo, his goals proving a major factor as the club landed their first ever Spanish title. His exploits in Spain have not gone unnoticed back in the Netherlands, earning him a place in the Dutch squad. He played previously for SBV Vitesse.
