Mainz
This is an article about the city in Germany. For the light cruiser, see under SMS Mainz. For the Mainz sword, see under Gladius. Mainz is a city in Germany and the capital of the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate and was historically a politically important seat of the Prince-elector of Mainz (see: Archbishopric of Mainz) under the Holy Roman Empire, as well as a Roman era fort city commanding the west bank of the Rhine River and the frontier of the northernmost extent of the Empire. It is with that pedigree, a city steeped in two thousand years of history, historical figures, and regional and even international influence. Mainz is located on the river Rhine across from Wiesbaden, in the western part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main Region, and in the modern age, has seen Frankfurt blossom to share much of its regional importance.
