Mainz

Mainz is a city in Germany and the capital of the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate and was historically a politically important seat of the Prince-elector of Mainz (see: Archbishopric of Mainz) under the Holy Roman Empire, as well as a Roman era fort city commanding the west bank of the Rhine River and the frontier of the northernmost extent of the Empire. It is with that pedigree, a city steeped in two thousand years of history, historical figures, and regional and even international influence. Mainz is located on the river Rhine across from Wiesbaden, in the western part of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main Region, and in the modern age, has seen Frankfurt blossom to share much of its regional importance.

Mainz (franz.: Mayence), gegenüber der Mündung des Mains am Rhein gelegen, ist Landeshauptstadt und zugleich die größte Stadt des deutschen Bundeslandes Rheinland-Pfalz. Mainz ist Sitz einer Universität, eines Bistums sowie mehrerer Fernseh- und Rundfunkanstalten und versteht sich als eine Hochburg der rheinischen Fastnacht. Die größte Nachbarstadt ist Wiesbaden. Im etwas größeren Umkreis liegen die Großstädte und -räume Ludwigshafen, Mannheim, Darmstadt und Frankfurt am Main.
