Ein Großrechner (engl.: , ) ist ein sehr komplexes und umfangreiches Computersystem, das weit über die Kapazitäten eines Personal Computers und meist auch über die der typischen Serversysteme hinausgeht.Ein Großrechner zeichnet sich vor allem durch seine Zuverlässigkeit und hohe Ein-Ausgabe-Leistung aus. Er kann im Online-Betrieb (Time Sharing) eine große Anzahl von Benutzern bedienen, im Batch-Betrieb aber auch komplizierte und aufwändige Aufgaben durchführen. Die Benutzer erhalten beim Online-Betrieb Zugang zu einem Großrechner über Computer-Terminals. Seit sich Personal Computer (PC) durchgesetzt haben, werden diese Terminals durch sog. Terminalemulationen simuliert.

Mainframe (ang. main - główny, frame - struktura) (często w Stanach Zjednoczonych nazywany Big Iron) jako komputery używane głównie przez duże organizacje dla krytycznych aplikacji (np. finansowych, statystycznych). Są systemami o dużej wydajności przetwarzania danych i większych możliwościach niż komputer domowy. Celem systemu mainframe jest świadczenie usług dużej liczbie użytkowników. W odróżnieniu od superkomputera mainframe nie posiada dużej mocy obliczeniowej, a specjalizuje się w wydajnych operacjach I/O i bardzo wysokimi współczynnikami wielozadaniowości. Komputer o architekturze mainframe może z powodzeniem obsługiwać dziesiątki tysięcy równolegle pracujących użytkowników zachowując równocześnie cały czas rozsądne czasy reakcji (poniżej 1 sekundy).
