Mahajanapadas (महाजनपद) literally means "Great kingdoms" (from Sanskrit Maha = great,
Janapada = foothold of tribe = country). Ancient
Buddhist texts like
Anguttara Nikaya (I. p 213; IV. pp 252, 256, 261) make frequent reference to sixteen great kingdoms and republics (Solas Mahajanapadas) which had evolved and flourished in the northern/north-western parts of the Indian
sub-continent prior to the rise of
Buddhism in
India.
