Mahón

The Irish surnames Mahon and MacMahon are not related. For the town in Ireland see Mahon, County Cork. Mahón (alternately, Maó; Catalan it is also the official name, Spanish Mahón), is a municipality and the capital city of the Balearic Island of Minorca (the Balearic Islands conform an autonomic Spanish community), located in the eastern part of the island. Mahon boasts one of the deepest natural ports in the world.

Maó (kastilisch Mahón) ist die Hauptstadt der Baleareninsel Menorca. Die Gemeinde Maó hat 27.839 Einwohner (Stand: 2006). Der Ausländeranteil beträgt 15,2 % (4.243), der Anteil deutscher Einwohner 0,4 % (110). Gegründet wurde die Stadt durch die Karthager. Eine Legende besagt, dass General Mago Barkas, der Bruder Hannibals, der Stadt den Namen gab. Maó wurde während der englischen Besatzungszeit im Jahr 1722 Inselhauptstadt.
