The (Devanagari: ), is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Ramayana.With more than 74,000 verses, long prose passages, and about 1.8 million words in total, the Mahābhārata is one of the longest epic poems in the world. Including the Harivamsa, the Mahabharata has a total length of more than 90,000 verses.

Le Mahâbhârata (en sanskrit Mahābhārata, écrit महाभारत en écriture devanāgarī; littéralement « Grande humanité » traduit en « Grande Inde ») est une épopée sanskrite de la mythologie hindoue, analogue par sa taille (plus de cent vingt mille strophes) et sa portée religieuse à la Bible des chrétiens. Il est souvent considéré comme le plus grand poème jamais composé. Il comporte pas moins de 250 000 vers — quinze fois plus que l'Iliade — généralement partagés en vers ou çlôkas de 32 syllabes chacun, formant deux hémistiches de 16 (anustubh), partagés eux-mêmes en deux demihémistiches de 8 (pâda). Ce qui donne, pour un hémistiche : xxxxu--u-/xxxxu--u-(x=u ou -). C'est ainsi qu'étaient composés les vers épiques de la poésie sanscrite ou classique de l'Inde.

Das Mahabharata oder Mahabharatam (Sanskrit, महाभारत, n., , die große Erzählung vom Geschlecht der Bharata), ist das bekannteste indische Epos. Man nimmt an, dass es erstmals zwischen 400 v. Chr. bis 400 n. Chr. niedergeschrieben wurde, aber auf älteren Traditionen beruht. Es umfasst über 106.000 Doppelverse, so genannte Shlokas.

Mahabharata (s. महाभारत )- licząca sto tysięcy ślok (dwu- i czterowierszy), jest osiem razy dłuższa od Iliady i Odysei razem wziętych i stanowi najbardziej obszerny oraz najstarszy poemat epicki znany ludzkości. Opowiada on o współzawodnictwie pomiędzy rodami Pandawów i Kaurawów zakończonym osiemnastodniową, wyniszczającą bitwą na polach Kurukszetry, świętego miejsca pielgrzymek w środkowych Indiach. W szeregach wojsk Pandu poczesne miejsce zajmuje Kryszna, syn królewskiej dynastii Jadu, który widząc zwątpienie i rezygnację swego przyjaciela Ardżuny, tuż przed rozpoczęciem bitwy udziela mu filozoficznego wykładu w formie Bhagawad Gity.

Il Mahabharata (lett. La grande storia dei figli di Bharata), a volte chiamato semplicemente Bharata, è uno dei più grandi poemi epici della mitologia induista, insieme al Ramayana, oltre ad uno dei testi sacri più importanti di questa religione.Nella maggiore edizione pervenuta ai giorni nostri, il Mahabharata consta di circa 110.000 strofe (corrispondenti a 4 volte la Bibbia, o ad 8 volte Iliade e Odissea messe insieme), divise in 18 libri (o Parva), che ne fanno l'opera più imponente non solo della letteratura indiana, ma dell'intera letteratura mondiale.
