The Maghreb (Arabic: المغرب , Berber: Tamazɣa) is usually defined as much or most of the region of Northwest Africa, west of Egypt. The traditional definition as being the region including the Atlas Mountains and the coastal plains of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and (usually) Libya, was later superseded, especially since the 1989 formation of the Arab Maghreb Union, by the inclusion of a fifth nation, Mauritania, and of the disputed territory of Western Sahara (mostly controlled by Morocco). During the Al-Andalus era in Spain, the Maghreb's inhabitants, Maghrebis, were known as "Moors"; the Muslim areas of Spain in those times were usually included in contemporary definitions of the Maghreb---hence the use of 'Moor' or 'Moors' to describe the Muslim inhabitants of Spain by Christian and other Western sources.

Unter Maghreb (auch Maghrib; , abgeleitet vom Verb ) versteht man vor allem die drei nordafrikanischen Länder Tunesien, Algerien und Marokko, teilweise auch noch Libyen und Mauretanien, die aufgrund ihrer Geschichte viele Gemeinsamkeiten haben. Im Arabischen versteht man unter Maghreb in der Regel Marokko, welches das westlichste arabische Land ist und dessen Eigenbezeichnung ebenfalls al-Maghrib lautet. Ein arabisches Sprichwort lautet: Der Maghreb ist ein heiliger Vogel. Sein Leib ist Algerien, sein rechter Flügel Tunesien, sein linker Marokko.

Le Maghreb (en arabe al-Maghrib, « le Couchant ») est la région d’Afrique du Nord comprise entre la mer Méditerranée, le Sahara et l’océan Atlantique. Ses habitants s'appellent les Maghrébins.

Maghreb (av arabiskans مغرب عربي, (ereb, "kväll"), "platsen där solen går ned", "landet i väst") är den del av Nordafrika som ligger norr om Sahara det vill säga Marocko, Algeriet och Tunisien (ofta även Västsahara, Mauretanien och Libyen; de två senare är medlemmar i Maghrebunionen). Befolkningen i Maghreb består främst av araber men det finns även minoritesgrupper som t ex berber. Begreppet ställs ibland mot "Mashreq", den arabiska östern, som löst hänvisar till såväl Levanten som Gulfstaterna.

Maghreb - (z arabskiego zachód) - określenie stosowane przez Arabów w stosunku do regionu północno-zachodniej Afryki, powstałe w czasie ekspansji arabskiej w średniowieczu. Nazwa ta przyjęła się również w językach europejskich i odnosi się obecnie do Maroka, Algierii, Tunezji, czasem także Libii.
