Maenad
In
Greek mythology, Maenads were female
worshippers of
Dionysus, the
Greek god of
mystery,
wine, and
intoxication, and the
Roman god
Bacchus. Their name literally translates as "raving ones". They were known as wild, insane women who could not be reasoned with. The mysteries of Dionysus inspired the women to
ecstatic frenzy; they indulged in copious amounts of violence, bloodletting, sexual activity, self-intoxication, and mutilation. They were usually pictured as crowned with
vine leaves, clothed in
fawnskins and carrying the
thyrsus, and dancing with wild abandon. The Maenads are the most significant members of the
Thiasus, the retinue of Dionysus.

Maenaden
Mainaden (
Gr. ) of Maenaden (
Lat.), ook wel Bakchanten zijn figuren uit de
Griekse mythologie. Het zijn
nimfen die
Dionysos (god van de wijn, het plezier en de dans) vergezellen en vereren. Velen zijn oreaden, naiaden en andere nimfen, maar ook sterfelijke vrouwen kunnen mainaden worden. De mainaden dragen lange gewaden en dierenvellen. Vaak worden ze afgebeeld met een kroon van wijnranken. Ze staan bekend als gestoorde vrouwen ("in Bacchische vervoering") die wilde dansen uitvoeren en toegeven aan grof geweld,
seks, drank en verminking. Hun voedsel bestaat uit rauw vlees, dat zij met blote handen van hun slachtoffer afscheuren.
