Mac OS is the trademarked name for a series of graphical user interface-based operating systems developed by Apple Inc. (formerly Apple Computer, Inc.) for their Macintosh line of computer systems. The Macintosh user experience is credited with popularizing the graphical user interface. The original form of what Apple would later name the "Mac OS" was the integral and unnamed system software first introduced in 1984 with the original Macintosh, usually referred to simply as the System software.

Mac OS [] ist der Name des Betriebssystems von Apple für Macintosh-Rechner. Der Begriff ist abgeleitet von Macintosh Operating System, einer Bezeichnung, die so niemals verwendet wurde.Zwei Produktlinien werden unterschieden:Das ursprüngliche Mac OS, das alle Versionen bis 9.2.2 umfasst. Die Mac OS-Versionen 0.1 bis 7.5.5 trugen schlicht den Namen „System“ (zum Beispiel System 6), ab Version 7.6 wurde der Name „Mac OS“ verwendet.Das aktuelle, Unix-ähnliche Mac OS X auf der Basis von BSD, mit dem freien Betriebssystemkern Darwin und der Benutzeroberfläche Aqua. Aqua ist der Nachfolger der Benutzeroberfläche des klassischen Mac OS, die sich bis OS 9.2.2 kaum verändert hatte und ist somit der „sichtbare“ Unterschied zu den Versionen vor Mac OS X.

Mac OS to system operacyjny dla komputerów Macintosh firmy Apple. Był to pierwszy ogólnodostępny system operacyjny wyposażony w graficzny interfejs użytkownika (GUI). Wcześniejsze komputery Apple pracowały w oparciu o interfejs tekstowy. Idea graficznego interfejsu została zaczerpnięta przez inżynierów Apple z laboratoriów firmy Xerox w Palo Alto, gdzie w 1974 roku stworzono Alto, pierwszy komputer z graficznym interfejsem.

Mac OS è il sistema operativo dedicato della Apple per i computer  Macintosh a partire dal 1984. Il nome è l'acronimo di Macintosh Operating System. Mac OS fu il primo sistema operativo ad utilizzare con successo un'interfaccia grafica. Il gruppo di sviluppo che realizzò l'hardware e il software del progetto Macintosh comprendeva Bill Atkinson, Chris Espinosa, Joanna Hoffman, George Crow, Burrell Smith, Jerry Manock, Jef Raskin e Andy Hertzfeld.
