METOP

MetOp is a series of polar orbiting meteorological satellites operated by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites. The satellites are all part af the EUMETSAT Polar System. It is intended to replace the soon to be retired TIROS network. The satellites, the first of which was launched on October 19, 2006, are equipped with the same equipment as the TIROS satellites, plus extra atmospheric measuring instruments.

METOP est une famille de trois satellites météorologiques opérationnels à orbite polaire développés conjointement par l'Agence spatiale européenne (ESA) et EUMETSAT. Fabriqués par la société EADS Astrium Satellites, ils devraient fournir des données d'observation jusqu'en 2020. Ils embarquent onze instruments de mesure dont le sondeur IASI élaboré par le CNES et réalisé par Alcatel Space dans le Centre spatial de Cannes Mandelieu.

MetOp (Meteorological Operational satellite) heißt eine Serie von drei europäischen Wettersatelliten mit erdnaher polarer Umlaufbahn. MetOp wird vom europäischen Wettersatelliten-Betreiber EUMETSAT und der europäischen Weltraumagentur ESA in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Unternehmen EADS, der französischen Weltraumagentur CNES und der US-Wetterbehörde NOAA für das EUMETSAT Polar System (EPS) entwickelt. Das EPS dient der operationellen Meteorologie und der Klimabeobachtung.

MetOp (ang. Meteorogical Operation) - seria trzech satelitów meteorologicznych umieszczonych na orbitach polarnych przez ESA, co pięć lat, począwszy od roku 2006 (Metop-A).W latach 80., ESA planowała budowę interdyscyplinarnego satelity, mającego obserwować Ziemię z orbity polarnej. Miała on zostać wystrzelony pod koniec XX wieku. Na pewnym etapie prac stwierdzono, że korzystniejsze będzie umieszczenie przyrządów meteorologicznych na osobnym satelicie. Zdecydowano, że taki satelita, MetOp, będzie wkładem Zjednoczonej Europy w system satelitarny Światowej Organizacji Meteorologicznej, jako zastępstwo satelitów agencji NOAA. Aby zapewnić kontynuację pomiarów, na takich satelitach planowano umieścić przyrządy takie, jak na zastępowanych satelitach agencji NOAA. Pozostałe przyrządy, nie związane ściśle z meteorologią, zaplanowano wysłać na osobnym satelicie, Envisat.
