A Master Boot Record (MBR), or partition sector, is the 512-byte boot sector that is the first sector ("Sector 0") of a partitioned data storage device such as a hard disk. (The boot sector of a non-partitioned device is a Volume Boot Record.) The MBR may be used for one or more of the following:Bootstrapping operating systems, after the computer's BIOS passes execution to machine code instructions contained within the MBR.Holding a disk's primary partition table.Uniquely identifying individual disk media, with a 32-bit data signature; even though it may never be used by the machine the disk is running on.

Le Master Boot Record ou MBR (parfois aussi appelé "Zone amorce") est le nom donné au premier secteur adressable d'un disque dur (cylindre 0, tête 0 et secteur 1, ou secteur 0 en adressage logique) dans le cadre d'un partitionnement Intel. Sa taille est de 512 octets. Le MBR contient la table des partitions (les 4 partitions primaires) du disque dur. Il contient également une routine d'amorçage dont le but est de charger le système d'exploitation (ou le boot loader/chargeur d'amorçage s'il existe) présent sur la partition active.

Der Master Boot Record (kurz: MBR) ist bei BIOS-basierten Computern der x86-Architektur der erste Datenblock (512 Byte) eines in Partitionen aufgeteilten Speichermediums, wie beispielsweise einer Festplatte. Der MBR enthält eine Partitionstabelle, die die Aufteilung des Datenträgers beschreibt, und einen Boot-Loader, ein Programm, das ein Betriebssystem auf einer der Partitionen, startet.

MBR (ang. M''aster Boot Record) – główny rekord startowy, czyli umowna struktura zapisana w pierwszym sektorze dysku twardego. Często nazywany też Master Boot Block (ang. główny blok startowy). Il master boot record (MBR), nell'architettura dei PC IBM, è il settore di avvio che consiste nei primi 512 byte (mezzo kilobyte) dell'hard disk, che contiene la sequenza di comandi necessaria per l'avvio del sistema operativo.Il firmware di avvio contenuto nella ROM del BIOS carica ed esegue il master boot record. Il MBR di un disco di solito include la tabella delle partizioni, che è usata dal PC per caricare ed avviare il settore di avvio della partizione segnata come attiva. Questo permette al BIOS di caricare qualunque sistema operativo senza bisogno di sapere esattamente dove si trova all'interno della sua partizione. Poiché il MBR è letto quasi subito all'avvio del computer, molti virus creati prima che gli antivirus fossero diffusi operavano cambiando il codice del MBR.
