MAITHILI

Maithili (मैथिली Maithilī) is a language of the family of Indo-Aryan languages, which are part of the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European languages. It is spoken in the Indian state of Bihar and in the eastern Terai region of Nepal. Linguists consider Maithili to be an Eastern Indic language, and thus a different language from Hindi, which is Central Indic. Maithili has been considered a dialect of both Hindi and Bengali, and in fact was classified as a mother tongue of Hindi in the Census of India. In 2003 Maithili gained the status of an independent language in India. A movement to give the language official status through inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution so that it may be used in education, government, and other official contexts, resulted in Maithili being given official status in 2003.

Maithili (मैथिली, maithilī) ist eine indoarische Sprache und gehört zum indoiranischen Zweig der indogermanischen Sprachfamilie. Es wird außerdem zur Gruppe der Bihari-Sprachen gezählt, mit deren anderen Mitgliedern es eng verwandt ist.Maithili ist hauptsächlich im Norden des ostindischen Bundesstaats Bihar, wo es auch als Amtssprache anerkannt ist, und den angrenzenden Gebieten des östlichen Terai in Nepal verbreitet. In Indien hat es insgesamt rund 30 Millionen Muttersprachler, in Nepal 2,8 Millionen (2001). Ihren Namen hat die Sprache von der historischen Region Mithila. Früher verwendete sie eine eigene Schrift, die der bengalischen Schrift ähnelte. Heute wird Maithili in Devanagari geschrieben.

De taal Maithili wordt door ongeveer 24 miljoen mensen gesproken, vooral in de staat Bihar in India en verder ook in Oost-Nepal. Het is een Indische taal en behoord tot het Bihari, een groep van nauw aan elkaar verwante talen. Door de overheid van India werd het lang niet als een aparte taal beschouwd, maar als een dialect van het Hindi. Pas in 2003 werd het Maithili een officiële taal in India.
